Philadelphia Phillies' 2013 outfield has a younger look

Former Philadelphia Phillies' Shane Victorino (31) and Hunter Pence (29) are hardly old men. Juan Pierre (34) might be nearing the twilight of his career, but he's still productive. Those three players, along with John Mayberry, Jr. (29), represented this team's starting outfield one year ago.

Through a series of moves, that began last summer, Charlie Manuel's outfield scene has gotten younger and is ready for its 2013 reboot.

Darin Ruf (26) is expected to compete for a starting, or at least a platoon, spot in left field.

Domonic Brown (25) may, or may not platoon with Ruf. He needs to prove himself once again, or he will begin the year in Triple-A. Of course, the same can be said for Ruf. Which could make him a Lehigh Valley Iron Pig.

Ben Revere (25) was obtained from the Minnesota Twins in the Vance Worley deal. He'll play centerfield.

Delmon Young (27) was the American League Champion Detroit Tigers primary designated hitter last season. The Phillies signed the free agent with the intention of him claiming their starting right field job.

The rightly branded "Babe Ruf" launched more than 50 white laser beams over fences in ballparks that stretched from Reading, Pennsylvania to Venezuela last season. It's possible that this right-handed hitting, converted first baseman might have unexpectedly emerged at a perfect time in franchise history.

Revere represents a significantly less expensive version of Michael Bourn. His defensive skills aren't in doubt. If he's able to make consistent plate appearances, his presence in the lineup will be very positive.

Young is a large question mark. He needs to stay in shape and stay focused.

The former number 1 overall pick (of the then-Tampa Bay Devil Rays) in the 2003 amateur draft still has the potential to be a good run producer. Expecting glove-related miracles, considering his recent ankle surgery and lack of experience in right field, isn't realistic. Hopefully he'll be able to adequately man that right-side spot.

The most encouraging point to be made, when considering the this part of the Phillies' 2013 roster, is that these are young men's names that have been referenced. With that, outfield optimism is in order on the south side of Philadelphia.
