The official start of the gardening season begins next Sunday, May 15. That date is considered the “frost-free safe date” to plant flowers and vegetables here in Philadelphia’s Zone 6. The next two weeks will be the busiest for local Philadelphia garden centers. When perusing the gardening catalogues, don’t believe the hype; and don’t get caught up in the exotic plants, unique specimens, and pretty garden pictures; every plant is not for everybody or every location.
If you’re trying to decide what to plant, and what works well in our area, below are profiles of some of the most popular and adored plants in Philadelphia and all of Zone 6; from Asters to Coleus to hedges to popular perennials, to textured plants to Wisteria to Zinnia, it’s all here. Learn all about the Philly gardener favorites that grow well right here in the Philadelphia area, and in your own back yard. All of these plants are available in Philadelphia Gardening Nurseries this week if you want to beat the weekend rush. If you’re looking for plants that bloom now, perennials that bloom in June, July, or August, photographs of annuals, or even true blue-blooming perennials, just click on the links below and get growing!
