Philadelphia Flyers hope to ice Calgary Flames on Comcast

The Philadelphia Flyers (29-23-6) finish the pre-Olympic portion of their regular season schedule when they host the Calgary Flames (22-28-7) at 1 p.m. EST Saturday on Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia.

Riding a 4-1 streak into this weekend's contest, Craig Berube has positioned his third-place Metropolitan Division team to make a playoff push when the National Hockey League returns to action in late-February.

Steve Mason was sharp at the start of this season, but dipped a bit during the time of his recent contract extension negotiations. However, that modest backslide was hardly cause for concern, as his his on-ice demeanor was always steady. That stood in start contrast to a more recent orange occupant of his same position.

Mason's specific presence on the roster offers reason to believe that this decent, though hardly deep team, can rejoin the NHL's playoff picture.

The ongoing resurgence of 'G' also creates realistic optimism. Claude Giroux's offensive importance, rising far above each of his teammates, is crucial to any playoff hopes the Flyers have this season.

With a middle-of-the-road offense and a somewhat lower-ranked defensive contingent, Berube's best hopes appear to lie within Mason's confidence and a favorable first-round pairing.
