With the trade deadline less than a day away, the Flyers have entered what has turned out to be a wild trade deadline eve.

The team has announced they have acquired 6’1”, 190 lbs. defenseman Andrew MacDonald from the Islanders in exchange for forward Matt Mangene, a third round pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft and a second round pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

MacDonald, 27, is a strong defenseman who leads the league with 198 blocked shots and eats up minutes as he averages 25:25 of ice time on the Islanders. Despite all of the blocked shots, he is durable as MacDonald is the only Islanders defenseman to appear in every game this season. With four goals and 20 assists, MacDonald is a steady offensive player who is smart with the puck.

The move gives the Flyers eight defensemen for six regular spots. Simply: someone needs to go. Erik Gustafsson has been relegated to a healthy scratch, which is a disappointment, but now it looks like Andrej Meszaros might be on his way out. The Boston Bruins have been mentioned as a potential suitor.

The NHL trade deadline is Wednesday at 3:00 pm.
