After rain postponed day one of the U.S. Open at Bethpage State Park in New York, day two was called because of darkness

After playing only three hours of golf yesterday—which saw just 78 or the 156 players tee off—Friday saw 13 hours of uninterrupted play.

And—maybe expectedly, maybe not—Phil Mickleson is in the mix. Mickelson—playing for his cancer stricken wife Amy—shot 1-under for the day to finish five shots off the leader, Lucas Glover at 6-under.

Ricky Barnes at 5-under, Peter Hanson and Mike Weir at 4-under, and Todd Hamilton at 3-under round out the top five.

The fan favorite Mickelson has played through 11 rounds of golf and shot an opening-round 69. When Mickelson when to tee off to begin his day, the fans lined up to about a football field long, according to ESPN.

This is more than just a good first day of golf for Mickelson, considering the circumstances. Amy, Lefty’s wife, was diagnosed with cancer last month and Mickelson actually suspended his time on the PGA Tour to be by her side.

Mickelson was seen sporting a breast cancer awareness ribbon on his cap has he went through his rounds today.

The other prominent San Diegan at Bethpage this weekend is John Mallinger, Mallinger finished tied for 25th place, ending the day at 1-over.

That’s much better that the defending U.S. Open champion. Tiger Woods ended the day at 4-over, 10 shots off the leader.

Woods was playing even until his last four holes, where double bogeyed once and bogeyed twice, finishing the first round at 74.

Woods has not started play in the second round.
