Phil Hanson The Subtle Diagram @ Corbett vs. Dempsey

Phil Hanson's solo exhibition The Subtle Diagram is far from subtle. Large scale paintings dominate the show with his use of vibrating colors shifting from pastel candy colors to florescent colored paint. The hyper colored backgrounds must be viewed up close to get a great sense of the obsessive repetitive mark making that fills each one. Text, in colorful banners are layered over the paintings, as if the paintings could be an announcement or poster for the circus is in town! Labor intensive in the act of mark making, Hanson's paintings are accompanied by a skillful set of drawings in gouache and graphite on paper.
A 56 page color catalog accompanies the exhibition which is up through October 16th. Corbett vs. Dempsey is located on the third floor of the Dusty Groove building, 1120 N. Ashland. Gallery hours are Thursday, Friday and Saturday 11-4, and by appointment.
