Fans of the popular Everly Brothers are mourning the loss of one of their favorite singers.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Phil Everly, who rose to musical fame with his older brother, Don, died Friday in Burbank. He was 74.

Everly reportedly died of complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the result of a lifetime of a cigarette smoking.

“We are absolutely heartbroken,” Everly's wife, Patti, told the Times. “He fought long and hard.”

According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, COPD is a progressive lung disease that makes it hard to breathe. As the word "progressive" suggests, it gets worse over time.

The Everly Brothers were influential in rock and country genres in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The harmonic duo charted dozens of hits on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. Many of us born after the duo's popularity peaked even know several of them, such as “Wake Up Little Susie,” “Bye Bye Love,” and “All I Have to Do Is Dream.”

In addition to his wife, Patti, Everly is survived by his brother, Don, their mother, Margaret, sons Jason and Chris, and two granddaughters.
