Phelps hits the water; internet has a tidal wave

Michael Phelps is one of the most decorated athletes of all time. It was unclear after the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London if Phelps would be returning to swim competitively in Rio 2016. We all thought he had retired. Today, Michael was spotted in a pool in Mesa Arizona, preparing for some competitive meets, and the internet blew up.

Phelps’ longtime coach, Bob Bowman commented, "He's gotten back into good shape since September. He can give a good effort and certainly not be embarrassed. He's in enough shape to swim competitively.” CBS Sports actually reported weeks ago that Phelps may come out of retirement to compete in the next Olympic games, stating that Michael is “testing the waters.”

Phelps had never seemed very keen on the idea of swimming into his 30‘s, so he could just feel like a “fish out of water.” His legacy is also pretty much sealed. ESPN reports that Phelps has been involved with several swim schools and a foundation focused on water safety among other things since retiring. Fellow swimmer, Ryan Lochte, is planning on returning to the games in 2016, as he’s hungry for more, and reality shows don’t really seem to be his thing. Do you think Phelps is coming out of retirement, or do you think he’s just swimming for fun?
