Pharrell Williams caused a buzz in the sneaker world on Sunday night when he wore an all-red pair of adidas Originals sneakers during his performance of "Happy" during the 2014 Oscars. Complex Sneakers was the first catch Williams in the custom pair that has many people talking about a possible collaboration between the artist and adidas Originals. While many suspect that the pair he wore is a customized pair of adidas Instincts, there are no pictures available that officially confirm that to be the case.
Williams has been rumored to be joining adidas Originals since last month as he has been pictured at several high profile events wearing apparel with the three stripes almost exclusively. Previous collaborations between Williams and other sneaker brands include Nike and Reebok.
If the signing of Williams does come to fruition, it would be a huge indicator of the direction the brand is moving towards. Over the past few months, adidas has signed the likes of Kanye West and famed streetwear designer and BAPE founder Nigo to bolster their portfolio that already include the likes of Jeremy Scott and Yohji Yamamoto. As their signature names in adidas Performance like Derrick Rose and Robert Griffin III continue to struggle due to injury, Originals will be looked upon to carry the brand in more ways than they ever have before.
