The electronic duo of Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter hired themselves a drummer for live shows. Having a live drummer certainly does give an extra kick, though it seems like they could handle it on their own. They've been friends since junior high—just friends in case you were wondering.
As part of their sound, Barthel loops her vocals live, so it's going to sound slightly different every time they perform. Her voice possesses the ideal combination of pure, smooth, and sweet. Her voice layered over loops, hip-hip informed beats, and pop hooks have serious drive. Carter's guitar work adds texture and beauty. Post-punk revival music has been a big part of this festival, and theirs is a pleasure to hear and dance to.
They played a very short set of songs with spirit, drive, and energy. The audience toward the front definitely danced along with Phantogram. Sadly it wasn't enough, just an appetizer. Thankfully, there's a cure—buying the record! Eyelid Movies recently came out on Barsuk Records.
