Phalanx Leader is one of the newest "Theros" spoilers revealed today Sept. 2, 2013 from Wizards of the Coast's upcoming expert "Magic: The Gathering" expansion set in an article by Ethan Fleischer on DailyMTG.com.
Phalanx Leader - WW
Creature - Human Soldier (Uncommon)
Heroic - Whenever you cast a spell that targets Phalanx Leader, put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control.
His soldiers etch his words on the insides of their shields, their inspiration always in sight during battle.
Phalanx Leader might not seem like the most intimidating creature, however in an aggressive deck that empties its hand onto the battlefield you'll be able to gain an amazing amount of tempo. Consider this: With just three other creatures on the battlefield, targeting Phalanx Leader will give you an additional four power and toughness. That's a potential 12 extra damage over three turns. And in multiples? Yes, Phalanx Leader has potential.
It's important to note that if you control multiple permanents with triggered abilities you'll be able to stack them as you please. That means if you have a Akroan Crusader and Young Pyromancer and cast a spell that targets both Phalanx Leader and Akroan Crusader you'll be able to make it so that you get the token creature before the +1/+1 counter. Remember: First in, last out. If you put Phalanx Leader's ability onto the stack first then your other abilities, it'll be the last one to resolve. Throw an Anax and Cymede into the mix and things can start to get even uglier for your opponent.
How will you use Phalanx Leader?
