John Knobloch, the 'soon to be ex' mayor of Pevely has been accused of using city funds to pay for his cell phone bill. Reportedly, the mayor has claimed that it was not his phone bill but his wife instead. Somehow, I do not think that makes his decision any better.Apparently, this has been going on for the past decade. Apparently, the state conducted a recent audit of Pevely City Hall which led to the discrepancy. When the auditor asked for receipts the mayor refused by claiming that it was an invasion of privacy but eventually he provided 3 phone bills.
According to Knobloch, the board of alderman approved to pay for his cell phone ten-years ago with no strings attached. Knobloch disagreed with the board about the city paying for his wife's phone bill too claiming it was a package deal. The mayor would inform the city hall officials every month the amount of his phone bill and the Pevely City Hall would send a check to Verizon Wireless.
Pending an investigation, it is unclear whether they will force Knobloch to reimburse for the unauthorized funds for his wife's phone bill. Personally, I suspect that if he has been walking a thin line for over 10-years, I wonder what else he has done that was less than ethical?
