Just in time for the PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend that is scheduled for next Friday, September 13th through next Sunday, September 15th in all PetSmart stores across the country. In order to get humans thinking before they adopt, PetSmart Charities wants to suggest some tips for how to make the easiest transition for your new adopted pet into your home. Some include:
Ø For cats and dogs, make introductions slowly and cautiously.
Ø Keep your house — and your cat or dog — safe. Try to minimize exposure to hazards such as electrical cords, potentially poisonous plants, cleaning supplies and household chemicals.
Ø Serve healthy meals and stick to a regular feeding schedule.
Ø For dogs especially, suit up to socialize. Select a well-fitting collar or harness with a leash appropriate for your dog’s size and strength. Check with your adoption partner to see how your dog gets along with other dogs.
Ø For cats, choose the right bedding. Nothing says home to a cat like her own special bed. Since your cat sleeps a lot — an average of 16 to 18 hours a day — get a few comfy beds and place them in several rooms.
Ø For cats, manage litter boxes. Your adoption representative can tell you what type of litter your cat has been using. As with food, it’s important to keep things consistent at first and to transition slowly and carefully. Make sure you arrive home with a litter box, scoop and mat.

This time of year, a few things are certain: the days get shorter, leaves change color, and kids return to school. But, did you know that September may also be the perfect time of year to add a new companion to your home? That is the reason that PetSmart Charities offers their PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend, September 13th-15th at all neighborhood PetSmart® stores. Not only will you gain a loving friend through adoption, but you’ll also save the life of a deserving pet.
During this fabulous weekend, there will be more than 2,000 adoption partners on-site at all 1,300 PetSmart stores in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico to help those searching for a pet the ability to fall head over paws with a new furry friend – either a dog or a cat.
“Collaborating with our adoption partners throughout North America allows us help find homes for thousands of deserving pets each National Adoption Weekend,” said Jan Wilkins, executive director, PetSmart Charities, Inc. “By focusing our efforts in local communities to achieve the greatest impact, PetSmart Charities has become a leader in pet adoptions – finding homes for more than 5.5 million dogs and cats since 1994.”
Not only will you save a life by adopting this fall, but PetSmart Charities will also reward all participating local adoption partners; each will receive $35 in adoption-reward grants for every pet adopted this weekend.
“As part of PetSmart’s vision of providing total lifetime care, we are committed to saving pets’ lives,” said David Lenhardt, Chief Executive Officer of PetSmart. “We are proud to partner with PetSmart Charities to find lifelong, loving homes for thousands of pets this National Adoption Weekend.”
National Adoption Weekends are sponsored by PetSmart, Purina® Pro Plan® and Tidy Cats® (MAXX Scoop® in Canada). The final National Adoption Weekend of 2013 will take place November 15th through the 17th – just in time for the holidays!
