(c)Dena Stapleton "Isabell in her winter coat"
Savannah, the climate is nice all year but some years like this year it seems to be a lot colder and for a lot longer periods. In the colder climates your pet may get cold but the pet depending upon the location gets use to the climate as it gradually gets colder. These pets do not necessarily need clothing to help them stay warm. Other pets that are in mildly cold climates and it dips to below normal for more than a few days may need a little something to help them through. This is also the case if your pet has very short hair or you live in an area where constant snow is a factor. Some dogs that are arthritic and/or an older dog may be in need of a coat in colder climates to help keep their joints warm. Colder weather can make them hurt and stiff.
Go to Google and do a search for dog coats, you will be surprised on how many come up. After researching out many sites for a dog coat there was one conclusion, they are expensive. Prices generally start at about $45.00 (for an extra-small) and can go to well over $250.00 (for a large or extra-large). Some coats just go over the back and have a strap that goes under the belly and Velcro’s across the back. These are at the bottom of the price range. Some go over the head like a sweater, have a piece that goes across their chest and has a strap that goes under the belly and Velcro’s across the back. These types are in the middle to high pricing. Then we have the coats that go over the head, have the chest covered but have the chest piece that runs through the front legs to the belly and has straps that Velcro across the back. Most of these have some sort of sweater neck to keep the dogs neck warm. These types are on the high-end spectrum.
For a person that can sew, you can easily make your own coat for your pet. All you need is a pet, material measuring tape, template, fabric, Velcro and a sewing machine. Check out “Pets:101 How to make a pet coat?” for more details. Please keep in mind not all pets like to wear clothing. You must make sure the clothing fits the pet correctly and does not prohibit the pet from any normal activities. If you’re pet is wearing his/her new clothing and rejects it, take it off and try it again later. If after several attempts of putting on the clothing your pet still does not like wearing it then clothing just may not be for them.

Target has the best dog coats for cheap (at least in Colorado and probably online). I got a nice, fleece-lined, waterproof jacket for my Boston at Target for $15! I definitely recommend checking out their stock.
Hello Happy Tails Books, That is a great place to find on but they are limited to medium sizes and maybe if your lucky a large size. Ordering from their online for a larger dog would probably be ok. In my case, my girl is 65 lbs. I had to make her coat or spend $200 on one for her. I choose to make one. I spent $1 on discount fabric and I already had the outer layer of material.
Thanks for the info on another place to shop though.
