Pets overweight support group?

"The Biggest Loser" Host Alison Sweeney and Hill's® Science Diet® Launch the Million Pound Pledge to Help Cats and Dogs Shed Excess Pounds

Is your pet overweight?  Be honest!

I say this because many years ago when  I took my furry little love dog to the vet; he mentioned that he felt my dog was overweight. I reacted as if someone had just insulted me with one of the worst things you could possibly say.  I was defensive and absolutely in denial. As I look back at my reaction it is actually funny now, but us pet guardians do get a little nuts or let’s say “sensitive”.

Did you know that one out of every two pets is overweight?  That is unbelievable.

A staggering 54 percent of America's pet population is overweight and at risk for heart disease, diabetes and a shortened life expectancy.

While we are bombarded with information about the rise of human obesity in our country we are never made aware of the high percentage rate of overweight pets.

Hill's Pet Nutrition, partnered with Kelton Research to conduct a survey to better understand the cities where pets are in the most need of help. The survey revealed:

When it comes to the chubbiest pet city, our city Los Angeles ranks number one, according to the Chubby Pet Index. Rounding out the top five cities are Washington DC, Chicago, Minneapolis and San Francisco. For a full list of the top 20 cities visit www.PetFit.com

One has to ask how this human dis-ease is trickling down into our animal community.

Possibilities:

  • You  the pet guardian, we are the ones who make the food choices, we are the ones that buy the treats, we are the ones that fill the bowls and hand out the goodies.  We are the ones who cannot say No.  So we have to take the primary responsibility.
  • The next possibility can be the Food and Treats you are choosing. Your pet may not be tolerating your choices, due to an undefined health challenge or perhaps they are portraying an allergic response.
  • Perhaps you are not regulating the amount of food your pets is  ingesting each day, also know as free feeding. This can really put on the pounds.
  • Perhaps your pet is not getting enough physical activity, living a sedentary lifestyle, not allowing them to burn off the fat.

Like humans, animals are unique, they can have physical challenges and their weight problem needs to be determined and defined first by your Vet...no guess work is recommended.

Do not start a diet or exercise plan without having the facts and correct direction. You need to feel confident about your decisions, as remember your pets count on you.
