PETRA is Back & In Concert

PETRA, the legendary Christian rock band whose name means "rock", is back and in concert, 7:30 pm Saturday, November 12th at the Majestic Theater in Dallas, TX.

*UPDATE - Concert has been postponed*

PETRA, arguably the most influential Christian rock band of all time, who said "Farewell" in 2005 is back together again as "Classic Petra" with a band line up that includes:

Greg X. Volz - lead singer
Mark Kelly - bass guitar
John Lawry - synthesizer/keys
Bob Hartman - lead guitar
Louie Weaver - drums

Founded in 1972, this entire line up of musicians can be credited with the 1985 album Beat The System, as well as the subsequent live album and video Captured in Time and Space (1986).

Die hard fans can expect this "Classic" line up with Greg X. Volz to reflect Petra's golden era from the early 80's which saw the release of: Never Say Die (1981), More Power To Ya (1982), and Not of This World (1983).

During this time, Petra's sound was compared to mainstream bands such as Foreigner, Styx, Boston, Journey, REO Speedwagon, and Kansas.

Interestingly enough, Greg X. Volz was offered the position of lead singer for REO Speedwagon and turned it down; and Kansas lead singer John Elefante, along with brother Dino Elefante, would later collaborate with Petra to not only write songs, but produce several of Petra's later albums after they had acquired new lead singer John Schlitt from Head East.

For those who may be wondering "Why this line up?" "Why now?" "So what?" etc. The band offers these words from their website:

"At a time when the music business is struggling to redefine itself, Classic Petra's committment to who and what they are will serve as reminder of what CCM used to be and what it can be again ... musically, Petra can still compete with the best acts on the road today ... their return will be a call to their audience to return to that fervent faith of their youth ..."

It is true that within the Contemporary Christian Music industry, many individuals have struggled with the desire for fame and fortune, mixing the holy with the profane, compromising the ministry of the Gospel for the hope of popularity.

Petra of the 80's was always known for it's bold choices in both music and lyrics. This reunion tour from Petra's amazing past is the biggest Must-See, Don't Miss, Be Sure to Re-arrange Your Plans Event of the past quarter century.

As a dedication, and tribute, to these five talented artists and fellow warriors of the faith, whom I would guess will most likely never perform outside this tour again, I will attempt to write a new article every day until Nov. 12th with one of Petra's classic songs as the primary focus.

May your life be forever changed, may your commitment be renewed to the One who loves you more than you've ever known, and may your daily walk grow stronger each day as you find the only strength and hope you will ever need to re-construct your life upon the only true and faithful immovable Rock.
