Petition urging McDonald’s to offer vegan burger attracts Ellen DeGeneres

Although Beyonce and Jay Z recently attracted attention for their short-term vegan cleanse, other celebrities such as Ellen DeGeneres have been maintaining vegan lifestyles for years. Now a new petition urging McDonald's to include a plant-based burger has attracted Ellen to show up and sign up, reported Philly Mag on Feb. 3.

The petition was created by vegan diet guru Kathy Freston, author of "Veganist: Lose Weight, Get Healthy, Change the World" and "The Lean: A Revolutionary (and Simple!) 30-Day Plan for Healthy, Lasting Weight Loss" (click for details).

Kathy titled her petition “It’s Time For A Healthy, Meatless Option (Please!)." In it, she made this plea:

"Adding plant-based protein options at McDonald's will appeal to workers out for a quick lunch, families with health-conscious members out to dinner, children on field trips, and anyone looking for something different than the current menu at McDonald’s where even the french fries contain beef flavoring (they don't in Europe, incidentally)!"

Because more than one third of Americans already buy meat substitutes for both health and ethical reasons, Kathy hopes that McDonald’s will choose to power up the plant-based diet movement with their own veggie burger creation.

In addition to Ellen, the petition was been signed by Russell Simmons and actress Alicia Silverstone, who also authored a vegan diet book: "The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight, and Saving the Planet."

"There’s really nothing for me—or anyone who’s looking to avoid cholesterol and saturated fat or something a little more conscientious—at McDonald’s," pointed out Kathy.

"But if they added a veggie burger or something with plant-based chicken strips, I would totally stop in," she declared.

In recent years, McDonald's has earned kudos for adding more nutritional items to their menu, including clearly labeling the calorie counts for their foods. Take the Premium Southwest Salad with Grilled Chicken, for example, which has 290 calories or 150-calorie Fruit and Yogurt Parfait.

But will they choose to include the vegan menu option? You can see (and sign) the original petition at Change.org.
