Warren County, KY: Malachi is an approximately 7-month-old Pit Bull puppy who was chained to the bumper of a truck and dragged on January 20, 2012. Apparently the only thing that saved his life was that the chain tethering him to the truck had broken; otherwise, Malachi would have died.
Thankfully a waste management worker spotted some blood staining the road, and little Malachi lying in the middle with a broken chain in a ditch near his body. This compassionate worker stopped and immediately called Animal Control. A Deputy Sherriff picked him up and rushed him to the Bowling Green/Warren County Humane Society. Initially it was uncertain if little Malachi would even survive the horrific injuries he sustained when dragged behind the truck for more than a mile. (Source.)
On January 24th, 22-year-old Shane Helson of Richardsville, KY was arrested when he showed up at the veterinary hospital, claiming to be Malachi's guardian and wanting to see him. He has been charged with the Class D felony charge of torturing a dog and is being held on $10,000 bond.
Helson advised reporters that he got distracted doing other things and forgot he had chained the dog to the bumper of his truck, subsequently taking off and dragging helpless Malachi behind him. (Source.)
Named Malachi by the workers at the Humane Society, he suffered horrific injuries all over his little body. Gravel was imbedded deeply into his tissues, clearly indicating that he had been dragged for a great distance over very rough roads. Dr. Adrienne Price who treated little Malachi was quoted as saying:
"This is probably one of the worst cases I've seen with such extensive wounds." (Source.)
But this sweet boy has proven himself to have a huge will to live. Even after suffering shock, hypothermia and the loss of 30% of the skin of his body, he has shown nothing but love for those caring for him. This yet again demonstrates the forgiving hearts of animals, even in the face of horrific cruelty.
A petition has been drawn up by the wonderful advocates at Hand4Paws, asking that justice be served for little Malachi as well as to help all animals in Kentucky with tougher laws in that state. Little Malachi was helpless to escape as he was dragged behind that truck. One can only imagine his terror and agony as the truck kept on rolling with the skin being torn from his little body on the harsh roadway. He must rely on advocates everywhere to be his voice for justice.
The video provided with this article is heartbreakingly graphic. It shows the doctors working to save little Malachi's life, and should be viewed with caution.
Keep getting stronger sweet Malachi. Advocates everywhere are all pulling for you to get better and heal and finally find a loving forever home, where you will be a valued and cherished family member.
