Petition asks for sex worker immunity for info re Long Island serial killer

Long Island, NY - In an effort to help capture the Craigslist Long Island serial killer, police have asked anyone with information, including sex workers, to come forward. Nonetheless, those working in the sex trade still face the risk of arrest and prosecution should they do so. Thus, an online petition asks authorities to grant immunity to those sex workers who come forward and provide information regarding the elusive murderer.

The petition is addressed to Police Commissioner Richard Dormer and is sponsored by Care2.com. It reads, “I am writing to urge you to offer immunity to sex workers that provide information about the serial killer targeting women in their profession… Sex workers are far less likely to come forward with valuable information if they are afraid of arrest… I respectfully ask that you prioritize the safety of sex workers in your investigation…”

So far, since December, ten sets of remains have been found on both Gilgo Beach and Jones Beach. Four have been identified as women who used Craigslist for prostitution services. In addition, the body of a man and a child under five years of age were included in the find, however, authorities are still trying to determine if they’re related to the other remains.

Experts have posited the serial killer is a man that may be in his 20s to his 40s, is intelligent, married or in a committed relationship and has access to burlap sacks, which was the method of burial for the remains found. They believe he knows the area where he’s dumped the bodies very well, thus surmising he is either a resident of Long Island or once lived there.

Initially, authorities believed some of the bones discovered were quite old and surmised they may have been victims of 1990s serial killer, Joel Rifkin, 51, however, he disputed that claim, saying none of the remains recently found belonged to anyone he murdered. He also called the Long Island killer sloppy for dumping his victims in one general area.
