The old proverb, "two heads are better than one" holds true at the BB&T Atlanta Open this year as first-year tournament director, Eddie Gonzalez will have a little help and a shoulder to lean on with the addition of Peter Lebedevs as Assistant Tournament Director.
Lebedevs brings a weath of professional tennis experience to the BB&T Atlanta Open as the former tournament director of the ATP and WTA events in Memphis (Regions Morgan Keegan Championships and the Cellular South Cup.)
Lebedevs, who moved from his home in Perth, Australia to Memphis in 1983 to play tennis at the University of Memphis is grateful for the opportunity and he joked that he is a bit relieved that he won't have to worry about a crippling ice storm this summer in Atlanta, as he often did at an event with a February date in Memphis.
"I guess you can say there is more a chance of rain," smiled Lebedevs. "But preparations are the one thing we can control, and I'm happy to help with that."
Gonzalez says that Lebedevs' duties have gone beyond just helping with preparations leading up to July 19.
"I can't be in two places at once," explained Gonzalez as he looks forward to tournament week. "Besides the tennis, there are obligations with the media, questions from players and sponsors and just a lot of running around."
Lebedevs says it's been great working with Gonzalez and the entire BB&T Atlanta Open staff, but since he ran an event in the southern part of the country, there was always one thing he says he could count on and he's found it again in Atlanta.
"Community support," said Lebedevs. "One of the reasons I came here was the tennis community and they have been fantastic."
The clock is ticking, and the first ball will be struck at Atlantic Station in just days.
Gonzalez adds that he is grateful for the help and advice Lebedevs has given him and the entire BB&T Atlanta Open team as the event approaches.
"A great team can do some great things," says Gonzalez.
Here's hoping for great weather and then the great tennis with surely follow.
