Peter Benjamin Parker: The Amazing Spider-Man (Photos)

“I‘m three days away from you finding me running around Times Square in nothing but my web-shooters and my mask whooping it up about power and responsibility.” – Peter Benjamin Parker

With the death of Peter Parker’s mind (supposedly), Otto Octavius has assumed full responsibility as everyone’s favorite web-slinging hero as seen in Amazing Spider-Man #700 and although many fans are a little angered, it will be interesting to see how Otto takes the reins of one of the most popular heroes of all-time, making a vow to be a more “Superior” Spider-Man that Peter ever was. The Amazing Spider-Man went on for 700 issues starting in 1962 and recently ended to make way for Superior Spider-Man with the Marvel NOW! initiative and it’s already been revealed that Otto will still have an internal struggle with himself to do the right thing and as seen in the recent issue of Daredevil, people are going to see a different side of Spider-Man when he is called upon to catch Daredevil and he replies by saying, “I will destroy him!” to which the detective is thrown off with his response so expect the unexpected. Spider-Man is commonly seen as a brave and righteous hero with an indomitable sense of justice and responsibility which has led him to a path of heroism and humanitarian service. There are times his sense of responsibility are tested but he’s still considered one of the most iconic and enduring heroes in the Marvel Universe.

One of his most prominent traits is his sense of humor because even at the face of certain death, Pete invariably cracks a joke to annoy both his friends and foes, but Deadpool is known to rival him, or even surpass him at times because Wade can even annoy Pete. He also used to me more of a loner, but that has lessened over the years since becoming a member of the Avengers, New Avengers and the Future Foundation. Pete’s righteousness also complimented Daredevil’s maturity as a crime-fighter during Jean DeWolff’s death which led to an enduring friendship and he also made close ties with the Fantastic Four like an extended member of their family. Pete also grew quite close to the X-Men and more recently has bonded with his teammates on the New Avengers, but he is closest with Human Torch, Wolverine and started creating a strong bond with Carol Danvers. Spidey has gained quite a reputation with the superhero community, villains and civilians as well, learning he has saved roughly 10,000 lives directly and excluding all his team-ups or bombs/devices he’s deactivated. During a recent fight with Cable in Avengers: X-Sanction, it was even noted Spidey is seen in the future as the greatest hero of them all and has even earned a grudging but genuine respect from Loki when he helped saved Morwen.

At the early age of 6, Peter Parkers parents were killed in an airplane crash overseas so he went to live with Ben and May Parker in Forest Hills, New York. Pete was extremely bright and became a high honors student at Midtown High School, but his shyness and scholastic interests made him a social outcast. While attending a public exhibition demonstrating the safe-handling of nuclear laboratory waste materials, Peter was bitten by a spider that had been irradiated by a particle accelerator used in the demonstration and when making his way home afterwards, Pete discovered he had gained incredible strength, agility and ability to cling to walls. Later after seeing an ad offering a cash prize for remaining in the ring three minutes with a professional wrestler, Peter decided to put his newfound powers to the test and wore a mask to avoid potential embarrassment. He easily defeated his opponent and a TV producer who observed the performance convinced hi m to go into television with his act so he designed a costume and wrist-mounted web-shooters, calling himself Spider-man and becoming an immediate sensation. Following his first TV appearance, Peter failed to stop an escaping thief, claiming it was not his responsibility and forgot the incident as his fame rose.

One night when returning home, he found his Uncle Ben had been murdered and learned the police had the burglar responsible trapped in a warehouse so Peter easily captured him only to discover it was the same thief he allowed to escape earlier, realizing with great power comes great responsibility. After his Uncle’s death, Peter faced his first problem with the lack of money and his Aunt May was too weak to work while Peter was seen as fragile, but he decided to get a job rather being a scientist like May wanted. It was proving to be almost impossible to find a job and couldn’t continue his television career due to J. Jonah Jameson after he started a campaign against Spidey, stating he was a bad influence for children and a criminal for taking justice by his own hand. These protests started taking effect and turning the public against the wall-crawler which caused his manager to leave him so Pete searched the want ads, only to be rejected by all employers. While on his hunt for a job, Spidey saved John Jameson from an accident in a deviated space capsule but was still blamed by J.J. for the accident and later, Spidey tried to intrude the Baxter Building and battled the Fantastic Four as a way of showing them his power, but the team refused his entry after explaining they did not get paid for his actions.

Later that day, the Chameleon used Spidey’s identity to steal defense missile plans and used Pete as a pawn to escape the scene, but was eventually caught by the web-slinger. Pete later learned the Daily Bugle was asking for photos of the Vulture so after defeating the villain, Pete was hired by J.J. to get pictures of Spider-Man under the condition the publicist would not ask Peter how he took the pictures. Early in his career, Spidey has fought a countless number or his rogue’s gallery to and several of these villains would eventually form the Sinister Six under the leadership of Doctor Octopus, eventually failing. During this time, Pete dated Betty Brant of the Daily Bugle, while his Aunt May and neighbor, Anna Watson were constantly encouraging him to date Mary Jane Watson. Before his high school graduation, Pete continued to fight off various villains to include assisting the Avengers in defeating a Spider-Man robot and after graduation, he enrolled at Empire State University on a science scholarship where he met Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacy. After getting off to a bad start, Pete finally became friends with the two, including Flash Thompson who used to be his high school bully and after a period of absence, the Green Goblin returned, discovering Spider-Man’s identity and revealing his own alter-ego, Norman Osborn, but in a furious battle, the villain lost all memories of his time as a criminal.

Peter would eventually meet Mary Jane, but at the time he was interested in Gwen so Mary Jane began dating Harry and after the return of Kraven and battling a new Vulture, Pete began wondering if he was better off not being Spider-Man and left his identity, but when crime rose and Kingpin appeared in New York, Pete was forced to return as Spidey. After Otto Octavius managed to get his metallic arms again and broke free from prison, he tried to hijack a plane but the web-slinger stopped him. After a few battles between the two, they battled on a rooftop where Captain Stacy died while saving a child from falling debris, revealing to Spidey he knew his identity and asked him to take care of Gwen. Spidey was accused of Stacy’s death so he faced a few heroes to include Iceman and the Prowler and also traveled to London to prevent Gwen from leaving after her father’s death. After returning, Pete also started taking care of Harry along with Gwen and Mary Jane after he fell to an LSD addiction, which also triggered Norman Osborn’s memories of his Green Goblin persona and he fought with Spider-Man. Norman eventually kidnapped Gwen and Spidey fought with him at the Brooklyn Bridge where Gwen fell, but died when Spidey reached her with a web-line, snapping her neck.

Goblin escaped and a furious Spider-man caught up to him, battling it out with Osborn until he was impaled with his own Goblin Glider. Spidey was then accused for the death of both Gwen and her father so heroes like Power Man and Punisher confronted him and Harry later took on the mantle Green Goblin, kidnappin Flash Thompson, Mary Jane and Aunt May, but the web-head managed to find him at his father’s old house and defeated him. During the Clone Saga, Pete returned from a recent trip to France and found himself with Gwen Stacy, but with the help of Ned Leeds, he discovered she was a clone created by the Jackal and defeated Spidey with the help of Tarantula. After kidnapping Leeds and Spider-Man, Jackal explained he loved Gwen and blamed Spidey for her death so he used a blood sample of hers to make a clone. Later, the web-head battled a clone of himself to save Leeds from a bomb and Gwen’s clone made Jackal realize everything was wrong and freed Ned, but the bomb exploded, seemingly killing Jackal and the Spider-Clone, while the clone of Gwen left New York. Later, Betty married Ned and Pete proposed to Mary Jane, but she refused to accept and she eventually went to Florida with her Aunt.

During Secret Wars, Spidey was among the heroes kidnapped by the Beyonder and when his costume was damaged, Peter tried using the futuristic technology on the planet to repair it, but it was actually replaced with an alien symbiote which transformed his costume black. Parker used the symbiote and Mary Jane later returned to Pete’s life just as Puma attacked him and dislocated Spidey’s arm, forcing him to pass out, but Black Cat saved Pete from Puma and took him home. When MJ came to visit, Pete shoved her out the door when his Spider-Sense went off and Puma crashed in and after the battle, he returned home to find MJ at his place where she told him she knew he was Spider-Man while he tried convincing her she was wrong. When Black Cat arrived, MJ left and Felicia was snapped at by Pete, but when she started to leave, the suit webbed her hand so she decided to stay. Pete noticed the costume started behaving strangely so he sought help from Mister Fantastic who discovered the costume was a living organism and helped Pete remove the symbiote but it eventually escaped and later merged with Eddie Brock, creating Venom. Pete and MJ eventually married and Harry leased them a loft in the condo he and his family were living in as well, but due financial problems, the duo had to move back into Aunt May’s.

Spidey once again allied with the Avengers to stop Nebula from destroying reality and eventually inducted into the ranks on a provisional basis. Pete later returned to his postgraduate work as a lab assistant at ESU where he was briefly endowed with the powers of Captain Universe in order to stop a series of robots to include the Tri-Sentinel, and the extra powers left him. Later after suffering a heart attack, Pete met Ben Reilly who had created the Scarlet Spider persona dubbed by the Daily Bugle and helped Pete while MJ became pregnant so the two briefly moved to Portland as Pete considered retiring as Spidey in order to raise a family. During this time, Reilly assumed the role of Spider-Man while MJ was to give birth, but was rushed to the hospital and Norman Osborn (after his return) stole the baby after the Parkers were told the baby died in a miscarriage, but when Goblin tried killing Pete, Reilly jumped in front of the glider, sacrificing himself to save him. Norman returned once again to take control of the Daily Bugle and angered Pete, causing the web-slinger to brutally beat Norman and caught on a hidden camera, which was then shown to the media, making Spidey a criminal and increased pressure was placed on capturing him.

In order to continue fighting crime, Pete took up the mantle of various different heroes he created: Dusk, Hornet, Prodigy and Ricochet, which led to publicly exonerating Spider-Man so he returned to his normal identity and the four costumes were later given to four teenagers, being named the Slingers. When Aunt May was discovered to be alive, Pete, MJ and Aunt May moved into an apartment in Manhattan where he promised MJ to give up Spider-Man but still continued to sneak out and their marriage began straining, but before they could reconcile, MJ was supposedly killed when her airplane exploded until Pete discovered she was captured and rescued her, but she ultimately decided to leave in order to adjust by herself and they separated. Pete then took a job as a teacher at Midtown High where he encountered Ezekiel who knew Pete’s secret identity, warning him that Morlun would try and kill him. After ignoring the warnings, he was soon defeated by Morlun and attempted to get Ezekiel to help, but he refused to do so until he was beaten again and seemingly died. Spidey then injected himself with radiation at a nuclear power plant and he beat Morlun, but after the battle he went to his apartment and fell into a deep sleep where Aunt May discovered him with severe wounds and his Spider-Man costume lying on the floor.

After a day of discovering his secret identity, May revealed she knew for sometime which made their relationship stronger than ever and eventually MJ returned to reunite with Pete. After a breakout at the Raft, Spidey joined the New Avengers and he moved into Avengers Tower with May and MJ after an enemy destroyed both his and May’s places. Shortly after, Peter sided with Iron Man in support of the Superhuman Registration Act during Civil War and unmasked himself on live television in support of the Stark’s cause, but eventually switched sides after fighting against some of his fellow heroes and the existence of a Thor clone. After Captain America surrendered, Spidey was one of the few heroes who did not accept amnesty and continued working underground with the New Avengers, but his now public identity known allowed Kingpin to put a hit on Parker’s family and an assassin critically injured Aunt May so Pete donned the Black Suit to track down those responsible and decided to pursue re-establishing his secret identity. While becoming desperate to save May’s life, Spidey sought the help of Dr. Strange and even appealed to Stark who sent $2 million dollars to pay May’s hospital fees and give her the best care possible.

Later, Mephisto offered to save May’s life in exchange of Peter and MJ’s love, also ensuring everyone would forget Pete’s identity as Spider-Man so he re-arranged history to make it Pete would not show up to his wedding , but stayed together as a long-time couple. This re-arrangement also caused Dr. Strange to erase people’s memories about his identity (except MJ) and protected Pete with a psychic blind spot, but this hurt MJ and the two had to accept their relationship put everyone they cared about in danger so it would be best they stay friends. After five years, Harry returned and Pete rejoined the Daily Bugle which was now owned by Dexter Bennett and he began working as a paparazzi reporter, but after his photos of celebrity Bobby Carr resulted in the deaths of women by a crazed stalker, Peter decided to destroy the photos and he was fired. Peter then learned his name was blacklisted by Bennett to nearly every news source in town which prevented him from finding work, but Harry suggested finding a job at a news source that was Bennett’s enemy and he joined Front Line. During Dark Reign, Venom was transformed into a more Spider-Man look and joined the Dark Avengers so Pete had to reveal his identity to the New Avengers in order to earn the team’s trust.

While in the Macroverse, Spidey re-revealed his identity to the Fantastic Four and after returning, J. Jonah Jameson had become the new mayor of New York and using the Fantastic Four’s unstable molecules, Spidey infiltrated Osborn’s Avengers as Venom, discovering Norman wanted to make Harry a new hero called American Son, but after being captured, Harry confronted his father when he learned the truth about his relationship with Lily Hollister and Spidey prevented him from killing Norman. After the wedding of May and Jay Jameson, Spidey saved him from Doctor Octopus with the help of Human Torch and MJ also returned to New York while Pete started a relationship with Black Cat, also seeing the return of Kaine. Soon after, the Kravinoff family started a vengeance scheme against Spidey by kidnapping Madame Web and Mattie Franklin while also acquiring a videotape of Norman practicing illegal experiments to damage his reputation by leaking it to the public. Sasha Kravinoff began a Gauntlet by putting Spidey against many repowered villains from for revenge and the Kravinoffs eventually killed Mattie in order to resurrect the Grim Hunter.

Spidey was eventually hunted and killed him to revive Kraven, but it was revealed to actually be Kaine who was killed after switching places with Pete and after a battle with the Kravinoff’s, Madame Web died and was replaced by Julia Carpenter and Kaine was later resurrected, but mutated into a more spider-like creature. During Big Time, Spidey finds out the child Norman and Lily had was actually Harry’s, who later leaves. Pete also starts a relationship with Carlie Cooper, joins the main Avenger team and also lands a dream job as a scientist at Horizon Labs where he gains access to a mass amount of technology and fights a new Hobgoblin. After the death of Johnny Storm, Pete joins the Future Foundation and helps them fight an inter-dimensional version of Reed Richards as well as the Sinister. On their third mission, Reed locates the epicenter of the dimensional anomalies the team had been fixing and as they explore an island in the Caribbean, they are attacked by zombie pirates, which turn out to be a hoax by the Sinister Six with only Mysterio and Chameleon are present while the other 4 members are robots. Meanwhile, Doctor Octopus and the others infiltrate the Baxter Building to steal tech for Otto’s further plans.

After helping Anti-Venom reveal Mr. Negative’s identity and helping the Avengers Academy, Spidey discovers the Jackal returns during Spider-Islandand gives the majority of New Yorkers spider-powers, but it’s later revealed Spider-Queen is the true mastermind who is out to turn the whole human race into spiders. Reed creates a cure using the Anti-Venom Symbiote and after battling Pete, Kaine is accidentally cured from his mutations, turning him into a perfect clone so he kills Spider-Queen and Pete cures every citizen via Octobots. After Carlie discovers Pete is Spider-Man during the event, she breaks up with him. During Ends of the Earth, Otto wants to be remembered as a man who saved Earth before he died by offering the chance to stop the Greenhouse Effect so Spidey dons a new suit and joins the Avengers in stopping the Sinister Six. But after every Avenger is subdued, Silver Sable saves Pete and Black Widow and they defeat Sandman, but Otto asks for help from all nations to capture Spidey, calling on many villains to hunt him and his allies down. At the same time, Spidey calls on all heroes to destroy Otto’s facilities, but when he and his allies arrive at Otto’s main base in Romania, Ock states Spidey is right and activates his satellites, causing a huge explosion in areas facing the sun.

When the trio exits the base they see an explosion and Spidey believes they failed, but it’s later revealed to be a trick by Mysterio while Chameleon uses a robot to fight Spidey and is defeated. Mysterio is then convinced to assist Spidey to help him catch Otto in his Guatemalan base, but he uses his mind-controlled Avengers as his new Sinister Six. The mind-controlled team is defeated and then Sable and Spidey head to Otto’s underwater base where they are faced by Rhino while the base starts to flood and Sable is trapped by Rhino with the choice to either continue the fight or let him drown himself and Sable but stop Otto. Spidey chooses to leave Sable to her death at her request and manages to destroy Otto’s arms and equipment before defeating him. After failing to completely cure Lizard with Morbius’ help, Spidey sides with his fellow Avengers during AvX and is present during the Siege of Utopia and attempted to take Hope Summers away along with Wolverine, but fail to do so when she incapacitates the two. Spidey then comes into conflict with several X-Men, to include the new Juggernaut, while searching for Hope and after the Phoenix Force is split, forming the Phoenix Five as its hosts.

Spidey is then brought to K’un-Lun due to a prophecy that predicted he would train Hope and while she was initially unresponsive to him as a teacher, Spidey told her about what his Uncle Ben told him, “With great power comes great responsibility,” and she quickly took to him. Later, when the Avengers attempted to free their imprisoned teammates by Colossus and Magik, Spidey bought the time to do so and got beaten badly by Piotr, but when Magik told him to kill Spidey, the two started arguing and Pete took advantage by convincing them to attack each other. As they do, both of them are knocked unconscious and are depowered of their portions of the entity and during the final battle against Dark Phoenix Cyclops, Spidey was present when Hope and Scarlet Witch destroyed the entity once and for all. Later, while web-swinging, Spidey comes across a Mysterio from a different time and is sent through a rift into Earth-1610 where he encounters Miles Morales who subdues him and takes him into S.H.I.E.L.D. custody. After regaining consciousness, Peter is interrogated by Nick Fury who believes his story of coming from another universe and sends him off with Morales to learn that world’s history, but during their talk, Pete and Miles are attacked by a robotic Mysterio which self-destructed, incapacitating Miles.

Pete heads off on his own to investigate and is shocked to discover his counterpart died in a battle against Green Goblin and the fact his identity is public knowledge so he makes his way to Queens, coming across May Parker and Gwen Stacy who are initially furious thinking he is disrespecting them until he unmasks and Miles vouches for him, leading May to pass out. After May awakens, she heads upstairs and hears Pete exchanging stories with Gwen, but when she asked what happened to her in his dimension, he becomes uncomfortable and changes the topic. After a tearful reunion of sorts, Fury arrives to pick Pet e up and he’s taken over to meet Iron Man where the two begin working on a time-space formula until Miles points out a familiar building in a previous fight with Mysterio. Pete then leads the charge to Mysterio’s headquarters where they quickly subdue him before he could destroy the portal and trap Pete, so he then gives Miles his blessing as the new Spidey and returns to his world, running an online search to see if his world had a Miles Morales. Shortly after returning, Otto Octavius uses a mind-swapping Octobot on Pete, putting himself in Spidey’s body and trapping Pete in his own.

Otto was able to access Pete’s memories and vice/versa where Pete discovered Otto used an Octobot to switch brain patterns and used that same bot to send a message to a group of villains to help him get free from prison and then tasked to bring Spider-man to him. He put a new set of tentacles on and decided to search for the Octobot that was used for the mind transference and went to Stark Tower in order to ask for Tony’s help, but encountered Otto as Spidey who then released a set of giant Octobots worldwide to distract the Avengers. Both men battled until they fell from the tower into the ground, fatally wounding Otto’s body and when Pete tried using the mind-swapping Octobot, Otto revealed he was using a Carbonadium helmet, making his brain totally inaccessible and Otto declared his final victory against Pete by giving him a lethal punch. Both then discovered the Octobot managed to connect their minds and Pete forced Otto to revive his most suffering experiences and memories as Spider-man, making him realize the responsibility his power came with so Otto promised Pete to continue his legacy as both Spider-Man and Peter Parker.

Powers /Abilities

Peter Parker possesses the proportionate powers of s spider which grant him superhuman strength, speed, durability and numerous arachnid-like abilities. Pete can mentally control the flux of inter-atomic attraction between molecular boundary layers which affect the traction between surfaces of his body and another object and at one point showed this by making his mask stick to his face when Anti-Venom attempted to take it off. Spidey also possesses superhuman strength which enables him to lift approximately 10 tons and his strength is sufficient enough to throw a semi-truck with ease so he has to pull his punches and kicks unless fighting someone with similar or greater physical durability, otherwise his blows would prove fatal to a normal human. His strength also extends to his legs, enabling him to jump to a height of several stories and he is also capable of running/moving at speeds fast enough to catch up with an accelerating car on foot. Pete’s body is also tougher and more resistant to certain types of injury to the point where tensing his muscles while being punched by a trained heavyweight boxer caused the attacker’s wrists to break and states he must roll with punches thrown by people without similar strength or durability to avoid breaking their wrists as well.

Pete’s agility, balance and bodily coordination are all enhanced to superhuman levels which allow his tendons and connective tissues are twice as elastic as the average human, allowing him combined agility and acrobatic prowess of the most accomplished circus aerialists and acrobats. He also possesses the ability to achieve a state of perfect equilibrium in any position imaginable and seems to be able to adjust his position by instinct, enabling him to balance himself on virtually any object. His rate of healing is also powerful enough to recover from severe injuries in a matter of days. Pete also possesses an extrasensory sense which warns him of potential immediate danger by manifestation of a tingling sensation in the back of his skull and links to his kinesthetics, enabling him to evade most any attacks unless he cognitively overrides the automatic reflexes. The speed of his senses can vary from several hundredths of a second to several minutes and can discern the nature of the threat by severity of danger and can even be triggered when he is either asleep or stunned. Pete also displays an uncanny affinity for science with his IQ at 250 and is also an accomplished chemist and physicist. He is an excellent hand-to-hand combatant utilizing a fighting style directly complimenting his abilities and after his brief loss of his spider-senses, Pete received formal combat training from Shang-Chi, creating a new martial art style known as “Way of the Spider” and his skills have advanced further once his spider-sense returned.
