"Spring a Pet" is a yearly fundraiser to address pet overpopulation and many more issues that rescue groups and shelters work to combat every day. Moneys raised in the stores go directly into the communities in which they are raised, as well as to supplement funds used for grants and disaster relief in the upcoming months. Petco Foundation states "every Spring, while many are looking forward to the messages of new life and happy times, shelters and rescues wait with trepidation to see what awaits them" because more and more litters of unwanted puppies and kittens are dropped off at shelters.
This year, Petco Foundation has named a special adopted dog "Jeanie, the 3-legged pooch" as its spokes-dog to promote its commitment to pet adoption and helping with spay/neuter programs nationwide. "Jeanie" just happens to be a resident of Lake Charles and is well known locally for her stunning good looks, quirky humor, and ability to keep up with canines of the 4-legged variety. Jeanie was rescued in a rural area just outside of Lake Charles at about 6 months old and the rescue group got her the vet care she desperately needed, and sadly that included the amputation of her front right leg. But Jeanie isn't one to feel sorry for herself because she is different. On the contrary, she embraces her unique physical attributes and encourages humans to adopt homeless pets instead of supporting "puppy mills" or "backyard breeders". Rescuers suspect Jeanie was a result of backyard breeding and she is a self-proclaimed "Pomayorkapoopillon". On March 9, 2013, Jeanie will be meeting the public at the Petco store on Prien Lake Road in Lake Charles, LA
She even has her own Facebook page and a Twitter account (@Jeanie3legs) and has quite a following of fans and celebrity admirers. Jeanie was rescued by Lake Area Partnership for Animal Welfare and it didn't take long before all her charm and cuteness shined right through her obvious physical differences. Jeanie's adoptive Mommy, Lydia, has given her the most loving home that embraces her special needs and encourages humans to be more willing to adopt special needs dogs because they might just find a treasure of a pet like Jeanie.
Jeanie has so many accomplishments as an advocate for "rescue and adoption" programs, and being Petco Foundation's "Spring a Pet" mascot has just elevated her to a place where she can shine her love down on more people and pets. Since being adopted, Jeanie has become a certified "Therapy Dog" through Therapy Dogs, Inc and is a member of "Dr. Dogs Pet Therapy Team", and visits Lake Area hospitals, nursing homes, libraries, and other special events to promote the healing effects that pets can have on humans.
Jeanie will be at the Lake Charles Petco store on March 9 from 11am to 4pm signing "pawtographs" and taking photos with her fans. There will be free doggie treats and door prizes, and most importantly, local rescue groups and shelter will be there with adoptable pets. Special "freebies" will also be given to customers who donate $20 or more to the fundraiser. So come meet cute little Jeanie and hear more of her story while checking out all the adoptable pets that are homeless and waiting for you. The "Spring a Pet" fundraiser takes place from March 2-23 and shoppers can make donations at their nearest Petco store, then the proceeds go directly to the local rescues that are adoption partners with Petco.
