PETA Rose Parade float protestors plead no contest on SeaWorld sit-in

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) stated in a press release on Wednesday that 13 of the 16 adults who held a sit-in in front of the SeaWorld Rose Parade float on Jan. 1, 2014 pled no contest to the charges. They were fined and released and given six months to pay the fines.

Amanda Slyter, who at her arraignment on March 13 pled not guilty with a defense of necessity, is still in the pretrial stage. The necessity defense maintains that the defendant violated the law in order to right a greater wrong. In this case, PETA believes that the holding of orcas in captivity is a greater wrong than holding up a Rose Parade float. The sit-in delayed the parade by a few minutes.

PETA Senior Media Consultant David Perle told Examiner, “PETA provided legal representation to all the activists, including Amanda, who were arrested protesting the SeaWorld float. The activists are responsible for their own fines due to rules against nonprofit organizations paying fines.”

Also arrested was Lisa Lange, PETA Senior Vice President. She issued a statement, “We PETA protesters can move on with our lives—but orcas can't because they're stuck suffering in SeaWorld's tiny tanks with nothing to see, nowhere to go, and no real lives. We're asking kind people everywhere to call on SeaWorld to release these orcas to seaside sanctuaries, where they can begin to be reunited with their families in the ocean.”
