PETA claims the University of Utah is abusing research animals - Feds to investigate

An undercover agent working for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) at the University of Utah states that they documented neglectful and harmful conditions to animals.

Here is a statement from the PETA website about its findings: A pregnant cat pulled out of the Davis County animal shelter gave birth to eight kittens the very day she arrived at UU's laboratories. When the kittens were just 7 days old, a chemical was injected into their brains to cause fluid to build up. After the surgery, the distressed cat—who showed great affection for her kittens before they were taken for the experiment—stopped nursing her babies, and they all died.

PETA had created a video to explain the investigation (see link below), and other claims have been made including that they documented a cat that had its skull cut open so electrodes could be implanted on its brain.

The Associated Press reported that federal officials (US Department of Agriculture) will look into PETA complaints at the U of Utah, and make an unannounced visit.

University of Utah officials said that will also investigate the PETA claims, but that researchers have always met federal standards for animal care, the Associated Press reported.
