The Purina Pro Plan “Rally Across America” national road tour, which is dedicated to finding homes for animals in need across the country, is making a stop in Denver September 4-6 at the Taste of Colorado event! The rally is dedicated to raising awareness and funding for local pet rescue organizations, as well as educating potential adoptive families on nutrition and how they can help rescue pets in need. Professional dog trainer Melissa Heeter will also be there to inform and educate.
Purina is driving around the country over the summer trying to achieve a goal of 400,000 adoptions by the end of the year! You are encouraged to stop by their tent at the Taste of Colorado to show your support and maybe look at adding a new furry friend to the family. They are working with local rescue groups and organizations so that animals here in the Denver area that need homes are getting the exposure they deserve.
So what can you do to help out local rescues if you are unable to adopt an animal? There are several ways to show your support and help out:
- Most rescue groups will have their own "wish lists" (this is Intermountain Humane Society's list, located in Pine, Colorado) either posted on their website or at their location. These wish lists often include things such as towels, food and water bowls, dog treats, shoe boxes (they make excellent cozy cat beds), and cat litter. Donations in the form of items or money are always welcome!
- Become part of a phone or email tree. When a dog is in need of rescuing, a rescue will often have an email list with people who may be able and willing to help out. Volunteering your time to help sift through emails and get in touch with the right people can be a big help for a busy rescue.
- Be a foster home. Maybe you are not in the right position to care for a dog or cat for their entire lives, but caring for them temporarily may be an option. Foster homes are always in high demand. Take care of a litter of puppies until they are old enough to be adopted, or take in a dog that has nowhere else to go until his forever home is available. Providing a foster home for an adoption dog means there is another space open in a local shelter for another dog to be saved.
And don't forget about the Taste of Colorado over Labor Day Weekend September 4-6. Come support Purina's "Rally Across America", and meet some wonderful people who are doing their part to help rescue pets up for adoption! See you there!
