Proctor & Gamble, manufacturers of Iams pet food has issued a recall for some of its prescription dry cat food due to suspected Salmonella poisoning.
Recently, the Food and Drug Administration conducted an analysis on the cat food in which some of it tested positive for Salmonella. That formulas were Iams Veterinary Formulas Feline Renal 5.5 lbs with lot codes 01384174B4 and 0134174B2.
You can find the lot codes by looking at the back of the bag in the lower right hand corner.
In a statement issued by the company, consumers are being advised to immediately discard any remaining food from these two batches. They are also being warned that they could become infected by merely handling the product, especially if they have failed to properly wash their hands after touching the cat food.
Symptoms of Salmonella infection in people include vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramping and fever. If you have any of these signs you should immediately contact your health-care provider.
Salmonella poisoning signs in cats include fever, abdominal pain, and a decreased appetite. If left untreated your pet could also exhibit lethargy, diarrhea, fever and/or vomiting. Pets can also be carriers and infect other animals or humans.
Procter & Gamble is headquartered in Cincinnati, and develops, manufactures and markets consumer and pet products and pharmaceuticals. Their prescription cat food is distributed through various veterinarians in the Salt Lake area, such as Willow Creek Veterinary Center located at 2055 Creek Road in Cottonwood Heights.
