With St. Patrick's Day coming up on Monday, the small town of Heflin, in East Alabama will be hosting a parade and a 5K run.
For several years the town, population 3,000, has held a "St. Pawtricks Day Pet Parade" which has drawn both crowds and participation to the event held downtown.
The event is open to all sorts of pets and over the past few years has included a variety from goldfish in a bowl to dogs and cats. This year, registration for the parade begins at 10 a.m Saturday morning. at Smalltown Bank, also located on the main street - U.S. Hwy. 78.
The parade itself will follow shortly at noon Saturday and usually includes an awarding of prizes in a small park downtown in front of the Cleburne County Courthouse. All pets are welcome!!
For runners, there is also a popular "Strides of March 5K Run" that winds its way leisurely through one of the residential areas of the city.
The run begins at 8 a.m. Saturday morning with registration starting at 7 a.m. at the Heflin Recreation Center. A "Fun Run" will immediately follow the 5K. Awards will be presented immediately following the race in the Heflin Parks And Recreation Department building. All participants will receive a "Stride of March" t-shirt.
The 5K run is open to 13 age groups, male and female including: 11 & under, 12-15, 16-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64 and 65 and over. Top three male and female finishers will receive a trophy and will be exempt from winning their age category. Awards will be give to the top three male and female winners in each category and the winners of the fun run.
