Pet owners can now rest with their pets

The state division of cemetery has currently issued new regulations that would allow pet owners ashes rest with their pets. The new rules announced on Thursday in Albany permits human ashes at pet cemeteries under certain conditions.

  • Can't charge a fee
  • Can't advertise that it takes human ashes
  • Understand there is no record-keeping
  • There are removal restrictions

The ban was statewide in April, the reason for the ban was that you couldn't charge unless the business is a not-for profit, this ban angered many animal lovers especially those that want to be buried with their favorite pets.

Since pet cemeteries happen to be mainly private making them for profit non-profit corporation laws didn't apply. Hartsdale, NY Pet cemetery has been adding human ashes to pet plots since 1925. The cemetery resumed human interments Friday.
