There are plenty of fun activities on tap this weekend – from learning about sled dogs to a movie night and book sale. Also check out the low cost vaccination clinic, open house for the New Fox Valley Spay and Neuter Clinic and several pet food pantries are open as well.

Book ‘em kitty – Stop by the Used Book, Movie and Music Sale at the Bourgeois Pig Café at 738 W. Fullerton between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Shop ‘til you drop for the kitties at Virtually Home Chicago. Grab a cup of coffee and check out the hundreds of books - from best selling authors and titles, including cookbooks, art, history, biography, sports, fiction/non-fiction, plus lots and lots of children's books!
Feeding pets in need in Lake County – The Lake County Pet Food Pantry at Central Bark Doggy Daycare at 256 Commerce in Grayslake will be open to Lake County residents on 9 a.m. until Noon. Residents interested in receiving food for their pets must meet certain requirements, including proof of low income, proof of pet ownership, a valid driver’s license or photo I.D and must arrive during hours listed above. Feeding pets in need in Downers Grove - The Wet Nose Pet Food Pantry will be "open" to help with Pet Food Assistance at 10:00 at their storage unit at Eagle Storage at 555 Rodgers St in Downers Grove. The first 10 people with completed applications and other documents will be able to get assistance. More "open" dates will happen in the future as our supplies allow. A member of the household must pick-up the food for your house. The application is online.
Husky Heroes - Meet the Huskies at the Morton Arboretum on between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. to meet some amazing canines. Sign up to foster or adopt a Husky. There will be sled pulling and speed demonstrations and a movie about the role of Huskies in Alaskan history.
Meet the Animals – Some of the adoptable cats and dogs will be on hand at the Community Outreach Center for Heartland Animals Shelter at Golf Mill Mall from noon to 4 p.m. next door to Target. Stop by to meet the animals, learn about adoption and to learn about volunteer opportunities.
Low cost vaccination clinic - Wright-Way Rescue will be holding a low cost vaccination clinic from noon until 4 p.m. at their adoption center at 7136 W. Touhy. Low cost services will be provided to all pet owners on a first come, first served basis. The costs for vaccines range from $15 to $25, microchipping for $35, Heartworm and FIV/FELV Testing $30, and Frontline and Heartgard as well. Learn more online or call (773) 353-9931.
Protests for the Puppies in Chicago – The Puppy Mill Project will hold an informational protest in front of The Grooming Parlor in Chicago between 1 and 3 p.m. Stop by to educate the community about the puppies in the window and the breeding parents left behind in the puppy mills. Signs will be provided.
Protests for the Puppies in Naperville – The Puppy Mill Project will hold an informational protest in front of Happiness is Pets at 1592 W. Ogden Avenue in Naperville between 2 and 4 p.m. This is the store that is accused of selling dogs infected with distemper. Signs will be provided.

Open house for the Fox Valley Animal Welfare League’s new Spay/Neuter Clinic from 1 to 3 p.m. at 11 Johns Street, North Aurora. Take a behind the scenes tour of the clinic, meet fellow animal lovers and get some refreshments – S.T.O.P. (Stop the Overpopulation of Pets).
Protests for the Puppies – The Companion Animal Protection Society (CAPS) will hold an informational protest in front of Happiness is Pets at 15647 S 94th Ave, Orland Parkbetween 1 and 3 p.m. Signs will be provided.
Movie time with the kitties - Tree House Humane Society will hold a “Mew & View” movie night at the Bucktown branch at 1629 North Ashland Avenue from 7 to 10 p.m. The movie will be Where the Wild Things Are. Light refreshments and blankets will be provided and a $5 donation is suggested. Showtime is 7:30 – call 773-227-5535 for more info or if you want to bring snacks to share.
