Food stamps for pets: Stamp out hunger, neglect and euthanasia (Photos)

Food stamps for pets are now available to help families whose financial difficulties are threatening the well-being of their pets.

The New York based program is called Pet Food Stamps and is funded by donations. The founder of the program, Marc Okon, said “It's aimed at preventing people from having to choose feeding themselves or their animals or having to surrender them to a high-kill shelter. We’re not looking for government funding at this point. Should the government be willing to provide assistance further down the line, we will look into it.”

The program is open to anyone in the United Stated and in the past two weeks, more than 45,000 pets have been signed up. Approved families will receive pet food on a monthly basis for six months. Currently Pet Food Stamps is only accepting applications by email.

A step in the right direction towards ensuring our furry little friends who love us unconditionally are cared for during hard times.
