A new charity, Pet Food Stamps, is now open for applications from anyone in the United States. The organization is a New York State non-profit corporation (pending) whose purpose is to help low-income families who are struggling to feed their pets.
These pet 'food stamps' aren't actually government-funded 'food stamps' but the organization is able to offer this programs thanks to the generosity of its contributors and patrons. Over 45,000 pets have been signed up in two weeks.
With the current state of the economy, many pet owners are faced with choosing between keeping their pet(s) and keeping food on the table. According to a recent New York Times article, 'animal shelters have reported a steep rise in the number of cats and dogs being surrendered as owners face unemployment, home foreclosures, evictions and other financial hardships.' Many of these animals will most likely be put to sleep.
Upon approval, the staff at Pet Food Stamps will place your food order with www.PetFoodDirect.com based on the amount awarded with your application approval and your pets' needs. PetFoodDirect is an independent retailer and is NOT a subsidiary or affiliated in any way with the Pet Food Stamps program.
It is expected in the fourth quarter 2013 that the Pet Food Stamps program will expand into offering free or heavily discounted veterinary care for all qualified program beneficiaries.
