While many in this economy are struggling to pay the bills, keep a roof over their heads and food on the table for their families, it sometimes becomes very difficult for them to provide proper nutrition and care for their pets.
Sadly, some animals are being set loose to fend for themselves. They are then found abandoned and starving, or are surrendered to already overcrowded shelters.
But for families who qualify, help can be on the way.
Pet Food Stamps, created by Mark Okon, is a new donation program seeking non-profit status. Based in New York, the program aims to help families and pets stay together by providing pet food to eligible low-income pet owners or current food stamp recipients living anywhere in the U.S. (Watch the Fox News video interview with Mark Okon explaining how the program works below).
Pet owners must apply by online application here until the program is moved into its new office, then applications will be accepted by mail. Once income and need are verified, those who qualify will receive pet food each month for a period of six months from Pet Food Direct. In the past two weeks, 45,000 pet owners have signed up.
The Pet Food Stamps website also states:
With the continued growth of the Pet Food Stamps program, it is expected in the 4th quarter 2013 to expand into offering free or heavily discounted veterinary care for all qualified program beneficiaries as part of the Pet Food Stamps program.
Many people who truly love their pets are forced to make with the difficult decision to give them up due to hard times. They feel they simply have no other option. A program like this will hopefully help them to keep their beloved pets where they belong - as members of the family they love.
