The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a dog food recall on Feb. 21. The Honest Kitchen recalled Verve, Zeal and Thrive pet food products due to possible contamination with salmonella.
One of the pet food company’s raw ingredient suppliers had recalled a batch of human-grade parsley – the shipment was sent in 2012 – that may contain salmonella.
The affected parsley was used to produce five lots of the finished food product.
A list of the recalled products, production dates, expiration dates, product sizes and affected lot numbers are available at the FDA website.
In a company statement to the FDA, “To supplement its quality control processes while maintaining its commitment to gentle processing that protects natural nutrients, The Honest Kitchen is enacting additional procedures:
- All dehydrated leafy greens will be steamed, to further protect against the possibility of Salmonella and other pathogens;
- All leafy greens will receive a second test for pathogens after arrival at the Company’s manufacturing facility, in addition to the testing conducted internally by suppliers;
- The Company has discontinued its relationship with the supplier who provided the parsley used in the production of the lots being recalled.
No illnesses or complaints have been reported as a result of this recall to date.
Consumers who have purchased the affected lots of Verve, Zeal or Thrive products can mail the UPC and lot code with a completed Reimbursement Form to The Honest Kitchen, 145 14th Street, San Diego, Calif. 92101, Attn: Reimbursments. They can request a replacement or full refund of the MSRP of the recalled pet food plus $1 to cover postage.
For further information or questions concerning this recall, contact The Honest Kitchen at 1-866-437-9729, Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. PST or email info@thehonestkitchen.com.
