Perugia, Italy: see beyond the scandal

If your only knowledge of the hilltop college town of Perugia is in connection with the murder trial of American student Amanda Knox, then you are missing out on one of Italy's most authentic and beautiful vacation spots. Perugia is the capital of Italy's central landlocked region, Umbria, and while it is overshadowed by the glamor of the Amalfi Coast, the relics of Rome and the artistry of Florence, it has a unique charm that merits a visit.

Admittedly, it probably wouldn't be on anyone's initial itinerary for a tour of Italy, but once you have seen Rome, Venice, and Florence, and if you are searching for a real Italian town without the constant barrage of tourist traps, Perugia is an excellent destination.

Whether you arrive by bus or train, you will want to immediately head for the main square, Piazza IV Novembre, to experience the majestic Fontana Maggiore. This wedding cake of a fountain, completed in 1278, contains layers of sculptures including representations of the symbol of Perugia, the fanciful griffin, and characters from the founding of Rome and the Old Testament. This is just one of the beautiful sights in Perugia; there are also several perfectly-sized museums, including an ancient Etruscan well and a fresco by Raphael.

As Perugia is home to two major universities, it is bustling with activity, and there are often students gathered in the square around the fountain or spilling out of nightclubs late into the evening. Compared to other towns in the region, which are serenely silent at night, Perugia has a lot to offer travelers who enjoy a night on the town. It is also ideally located to serve as a base for day trips to most of the region, including Assisi, Citta di Castello, Bevagna, Torgiano, and many other picturesque Italian towns.

In considering where to stay in Perugia, you may wish to opt for the high-end Hotel Brufani Palace, located straight down Corso Vanucci in Piazza Italia at the edge of town, with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. If you are searching for a quiet and luxurious spot away from the student activity at night, this would be a good bet. However, if you would like to be closer to the action and kinder to your wallet, the charming, family-run Hotel Morlacchi is a great choice. The rooms are comfortable, the hotel is located very close to the center of town, and the staff speaks excellent English and are all very helpful with planning day trips and anything else you could need.

From Atlanta, Delta Airlines flies nonstop to Rome daily, and buses leave Rome's airport several times a day for Perugia.
