It was a dull match as Wellington headed to Napier for the first ever A-League match at Maclean Park as they fought out a scoreless draw against Newcastle Jets.
The result leaves both teams winless through the opening three rounds with the Jets already looking in trouble as they have still failed to find a goal.
The Jets started well with promoted Andrew Hoole looking to get a chance away in just the fourth minute but hitting it right at Glenn Moss.
The bright note for the Jets was how well their defense was able to contain Paul Ifill making him relatively toothless while Carlos Hernandez loooked dangerous for the hosts, hitting the bar in the opening stages.
That soon faded as the Newcastle defense started to also contain Hernandez as they really controlled the match but couldn't find the target.
Chances continually fell to the Jets but their shooting was woeful with Joshua Brilliante struggling to find the target throughout the match.
The Jets defense really started to fade at the end of the half and Wellington Phoenix thought they'd hit the lead in the 43rd minute as Hernandez crossed in for Stein Huysegems who headed the ball, only for Mark Birighitti to save as the ball was crossing the line, leaving Phoenix fans appealing for a goal as they felt it had crossed the line. The referee disagreed and the half ended scoreless.
Ernie Merrick made attacking changes throughout the second half and in the second half it was Wellington who were the better side and looked the most likely.
Hernandez should have broken the deadlock mid-way through the half as he caught Birighitti well out of position but could only send his effort off of the post.
That was really as good as it got in the second half as neither side really lit up the match as both sides really struggled to get their shots on target and had to settle for a scoreless draw.
For the Jets there was some good news heading in to their F3 derby with the Champions as there are reports Emile Heskey could be back, but much like Sydney FC, their reliance on their marquee player could well hurt their chances.
