Persian kebab spot extinguishes the flame in Colonie

"Persian" is not a big slice of the Capital Region food scene, and it appears it has just gotten even smaller.

Simply Grille, a fast-casual kebab enterprise that operated for just over a year on a corner of the Kohl’s Plaza at 1818 Central Avenue in Colonie, is closed. Whether that is permanent or not is unknown at this point.

A sign says the restaurant is undergoing renovation, but such a message has more often than not in the Capital Region turned out to be wishful thinking or plain old disinformation.

Here are some clues it is the latter: Its Facebook page has not been updated since last spring; its telephone number has been disconnected; its website has disappeared.

Russ Heydary opened Simply Grille in October 2012, months after his original target date. In a spotless and very casual setting, he offered takeout and eat-in dining featuring a line of marinated kebabs cooked over a large char-grill.

A ton of basmati rice and a grilled plum tomato half accompanied each entree (chicken, lamb, Angus, ground beef). Pita served hot off the grill, too. Such Persian-style apps/sides as salad olovieh (chicken, potatoes, mayo, eggs, peas, pickles), hummus and zeresk polo (basmati tossed with barberries, currants and saffron) were a nice touch, all at a bargain price range of $6.99 to $8.99.
