Perks of being in a long distance relationship

Whenever the term "long distance relationship" comes up, it is followed by a slew of negatives such as missing the other person or being tempted to cheat. Being far from each other does have its negatives, but people in long distance relationships should not let their sadness and yearning overshadow the positives that come with the distance. These positives are usually lost for couples in the same city, so individuals in long distance relationship should appreciate the following perks of being far apart:

  1. Keep in mind that absence makes the heart grow fonder. It may sound cliche and overused, but there is a reason why this phrase is so widely popular. Missing someone is not always a bad thing. It leads to antipication and excitement at being able to see your loved one after weeks or months of being apart. The time you do get to spend together will seem ever more significant and there will be less of a chance that you and your partner will take each other for granted.
  2. Many same city couples get sucked into a routine and thus, lose the luster and excitement in their lives. Long distance couples do not experience this because they are not around each other long enough to develop mundane routines such as dinner and a movie every Saturday night. People in long distance relationships have a chance to do something new often because you can always travel to your partner's city, or they can travel to your city or both individuals can travel to different cities in the middle. There is never a lack of activities and life becomes a constant adventure. And since long distance couples do not get to see each other as much, reunions are all the more rousing. When your partner visits San Jose, you can show them around and take them to some tourist hot spots like the Happy Hollow Park and Zoo and Caravan Lounge.
  3. Many people do not see this as a perk or do not even think of it at all, but with all the time spent apart, people in long distance relationships get to be selfish and have the chance to concentrate on pleasing themselves instead of having to cater to the needs of their partner. In same city relationships, couples do not alot enough alone time to do the hobbies that they enjoyed before their relationship. The men can spend time playing video games or watching Sharks games at the HP Pavillion with their buddies. Women can watch romance movies that men dread so much or read cheesy romance novels.
  4. When people enter into relationships, the time they spend with their partner is usually taken away from time spent with friends or family. Couples in long distance relationships do not neglect their friends or family and can spend more time with them because they do not spend so much time with their honey. Girlfriends can go out dancing at Avalon or have an afternoon tea party at Lisa's Tea Treasures.
  5. The most important perk that couples in long distance relationships have is that they will not get sucked into the "comfort zone of death". Same city relationships typically enter this zone about six months into the relationship when most nights are spent in pajamas, watching TV and eating take-out. When couples enter this zone, the amount of sex diminishes because they are in their comfort zones. Married couples tend to venture into this zone and that is why married men complain about not having as much sex. Couples in long distance relationships take a longer time to enter the comfort zone of death because they do not see each other as much and when they do, their time is spent on exciting adventures and sightseeing.

Although long distance relationships do have their unfavorable aspects, LDR couples should remember to appreciate the perks of being apart.
