The Creole Choir of Cuba performs in San Francisco, on November 8, as part of its first major North American tour. The tour supports their newest album "Tande-La". The concert is brought to you by the California Institute of Integrated Studies.
The 10 member choir originates from Camaguey, Cuba, and sings in French, Spanish and mostly Haitian Creole. The choir traces its' musical influences to the Haitians that migrated to Cuba during Toussaint L'Ouverture's revolt, during the 1930's depression era; and finally during Papa Doc Duvalier's reign of terror.
Choir director Emilia Diaz Chavez states, "we sing songs of love, lullabies, work songs, and social commentaries."Their sound is a beautiful blend of harmonies, percussions, and arrangements. For any homesick Haitian, the Creole Choir of Cuba satisfies like a plate of fried plantains with rice and bean.
