Actress and Performer Jiin Jang

Talented performer Jiin Jang shares her views on acting and performing and what inspires her the most.

How and when did you first get into performing?

I've always been a performer since I can remember. When I was little, my mother used to take me to the main theatre street in Seoul every time my father did overtime work. Actually I don't even remember this, but there are proofs (pictures) and I did my very first performance at school when I was 9 years old. I still remember that feeling so clearly.

Who were some of your biggest inspirations?

My family. They are all such a hard workers and I do believe in hard work, also. Artistic wise, EVERYONE. EVERYTHING. I tend to observe as many things as I can and take it within myself.

What kind have training have you done?

Quite a bit. From a short course before my BA degree in Seoul to MA in acting that I did in London. Also I took several workshops and so on. As an actor, you should be always in training in any kind of way to keep your sharpness.

What has been your favorite role to play so far?

Medea. I always enjoyed playing strong female characters. However, as much as it sounds cliche, I truly enjoy every character.

What projects do you have coming up?

At the moment I'm working on my next big step in my career. I am also working on a new theatre production that will premiere in London.

Who would be your ideal co-star and why?

I would love to work with Helena Bonham Carter, I think she is absolutely brilliant. It's not easy to be good at both characterized acting and naturalistic. Also Meryl Streep and Judy Dench if I have the chance.. I guess this would be every actor's hope.

What are your plans for the future?

Work, love, live I guess. I plan for most of things but always leave the space to be flexible. Life is full of continuous uncertainties and I try to enjoy that.

What is your advice to other aspiring artists?

Be grounded. We are the people who work with people and work for people. We portray characters, relationships and life. If you think of yourself as "more special than any others" you are already failed in terms of the truth of our work. Also, don't give up. if you know what you really want and know what you are doing, that's what matters the most.
