Perfect Pussy Purs into the Bug Jar: 7/16/14

It's been a while, Roc city rockers, but man have I got a treat for you! The up and coming, female fronted, Syracusian-punk noise ensemble, Perfect Pussy will be performing at the Bug Jar tomorrow night! Tickets are $10 in advance and up to $14 at the door, so I suggest getting them early to save a bit of time and cash!

Purrrfect!!

Not to be confused with some run of the mill garage band, PP is an already massively successful act. Fronted by the fierce Meredith Graves, Perfect Pussy has already received stellar reviews from the likes of The New York Times, Pitchfork, NPR, Rolling Stone and many more!

Just see for yourself…

“Meredith Graves yells halfway through her band's savagely awesome debut LP. These art-punk kids hail from Syracuse, New York, previously renowned for great bands like, well, none ever. But they rage with an emotional urgency that recalls Hüsker Dü or early Sleater-Kinney.” ~ Rolling Stone

“Syracuse five-piece Perfect Pussy sound like a hardcore band fronted by Joan of Arc: A swirling maelstrom of fire engulfs a singer who shouts with the ecstatic conviction of someone who would rather die than apologize. Following a searing, four-song demo tape released last year, their proper full-length debut Say Yes to Love is an unrelentingly intense experience—23 minutes of five people pushing themselves to their absolute limit.” ~Pitchfork Media

“Even the harshest, most personal critiques aimed at Graves, her body, her story or the band have to include an aggressively pro-female signifier. This positing of inherent worth is vital to what Perfect Pussy does, and it's one of the group's most immediately apparent traits, despite (in fact, because of) Graves' massively distorted vocals. A singer intentionally rendering her lyrics unintelligible draws attention instead to the physical act of singing — or, in, Graves' case, screaming — and deems that most important. This band is about making a lot of noise and, in doing so, making a point.” NPR.Org

As you can see, this is no everyday punk-noise band! These guys are already making real noise in the music industry and they’re just one project deep! Furthermore, they're a band with a message, something I think is rather noble in this day and age.

More about Perfect Pussy…

As aforementioned, the band hails from the fairly local town, Syracuse, New York and is comprised of members from the local punk, noise and hardcore community. Graves (26, ex-Shoppers) and bassist Greg Ambler (30, numerous grind/hardcore bands) founded the band and the connected with Ray McAndrew (guitarist, 21) and Garrett Koloski (drummer, 23), each of which mention The VSS, Nick Cave and Sonic Youth as their chief influences. Shaun Sutkus, the band’s internal engineer/producer, completes the ensemble and names a plethora of influences ranging from Stockhausen to “science” and Glenn Gould, thus making for an interestingly compatible, yet eclectic bunch.

"I" The Video

Candid and creative, gritty and gorgeous, Perfect Pussy's video for "I" is precisely how I imagine a live performance from this band will be. Fun and funky, this band is bringing back the true meaning of punk-noise...with their own catty twist, of course! The video features a fired up PP, playing and frolicking, like only this band can. Performance shots, fireworks.... enough about that, just watch it and let me know if Perfect Pussy is the new felines in charge...or if you're ready to dog them out...
