In an exciting game at the Universitario stadium in Monterrey, Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente and Tigres UANL concluded with an even 2-2 in week 5 action of the Clausura 2013 of La Liga MX. Both teams arrived with a perfect 4-0-0 record and were looking to take over the league table.
Argentine Alejandro Moreno and Colombian Duvier Riascos gave Xolos their goals. Lucas Lobos scored for the home side. The visiting squad were able to get an additional two balls in the net, but were called offside.
True to his word, Xolos Coach Antonio Mohamed sent his team on the attack from the beginning. Within minutes Moreno had taken the first warning shot missing the near post by inches. Ricardo Ferretti also sent his team on the attack. It was clear that both teams wanted to keep the winning streak going.
A defensive error cost Tigres the first goal. Xolos pressured the defense. On a routine pass-back, Brazilian Juninho made a bad clearance sending the ball back . Hugo Ayala attempted a head pass-back to the keeper. However, he did not see Fidel Martinez. The Ecuadorian recovered the ball and passed to Moreno who fired into an empty net for the 1-0.
Martinez and American Joe Corona continued to be a force for Tijuana constantly moving ahead catching the Monterrey-based team off guard. The Aztec dogs were closer to scoring their second goal than Tigres was to closing the gap.
In the 32nd minute Xolos let go of a good opportunity when Moreno, Martinez and Fernando Arce all fired on the home squad’s net with no success. Xolos continued attacking but went to break with the 1-0 lead.
Tigres closed the gap in the 53rd with a center from Carlos Salcido. The ball rolled beyond the Xolos defense to Lobos who beat goalkeeper Cirilo Saucedo and tapped the ball in to close the gap.
The game continued with high intensity. Arce took a shot on a set piece. The ball bounced into the net, but the linesman called the play offside since there was a Xolos player ahead of the defense.
The home side took the advantage in the 65th with a miscommunication between Saucedo and the defense. Once again on a counterstrike, Danilinho began the play. He centered. A defender and Saucedo moved in to recover the ball, they both hesitated allowing Lobos to run in and take the ball. He turned the ball into the open net for the 2-1 lead.
After the goal Tigres took over the field forcing the Aztec dogs back. But when Tigres played best, Xolos found the net. On a counterstrike, Riascos took a rebound and fired into the net to close the gap to 2-2. Within a few minutes Xolos managed to break the net once more, but again a player was offside.
