Perfect grand marshals for the Doggie Gras Parade and Fat Cat Tuesday

Today we will celebrate! It is Doggie Gras and Fat Cat Tuesday in the animal world just as it is Fat Tuesday during the human Mardi Gras celebrations going on. As Helen Woodward Animal Center (HWAC) and their fantastic staff and absolutely loving group of orphaned animals get in the groove, they want you to remember that today is the day and the celebration begins at 11:00 a.m. with the Doggie Gras Parade.

This year the Center has a perfect canine/feline combo to act as Grand Marshals! It is their wonderful mother Chihuahua named Beignet (who nursed a baby kitten) and her baby kitten “son” Gumbo. Not only will this precious pair be able to stand out in the crowd, but since they will be the center of attention, HWAC personnel are hoping that the precise adopter that they have been seeking for this inseparable pair will step forth and want to take them to their forever home!

The public is certainly invited and the Center adoptables, alumni and staff certainly are hoping for revelers of all ages, breeds and creeds to stop by and party with them at their Second Annual Doggie Parade. They are certain that the festivities will take on an even more celebratory meaning since Beignet will lead the Parade as Grand Marshal with her kitten son, Gumbo right by her side!

This is a FREE event! It kicks off with a traditional Mardi Gras-style Parade, including music, beads, well-behaved pooches in Mardi Gras themed costumes, parade “floats” created from small wagons and pet strollers, and Center sheep and a mini-horse hoofing their way along the parade route in traditional Barn-ival style. The Parade will conclude at “Bour-bone Street” down in “Cat-on Rouge” with a variety of activities for the New Orleans-lover in all of us. Purple, green and gold will bedeck and bejewel the festivities, where attendees will sip on non-alcoholic Purr-icanes, compete for “Best Dressed Mardi Paws King and Queen” ($10 per entry) and take pictures against New Orleans style-backgrounds. Attending parade participants will nosh on traditional Mardi Gras King cake and cookies. It is surely a celebration you will not want to miss!

But the REAL celebration will be the public’s first chance to meet the amazing canine/feline team Beignet and Gumbo as they start their search for the perfect forever family. “This amazing pair is a shining example of the incredible orphan pets we meet each day,” said Helen Woodward Animal Center Animal Services Manager Ed Farrelly. “They have the capacity to give unlimited and unconditional love. We can’t wait to find them a home where they can live together in comfort at last.”

Remember that the Helen Woodward Animal Center’s Second Annual Doggie Gras Parade and Fat Cat Tuesday Celebration is FREE to the public. Proceeds from all Doggie Gras activities support the Helen Woodward Adoptions Department.
