Chives can be a wonderful addition to any garden!

Chives

Chives are another easy to grow herb which will prosper in full or partial sun. These herbs will get anywhere from 8”- 15” tall, though should be harvested before flowering for the freshest results. Part of the lily family, chives produce bulbs underground which will outlast the coldest of winters to bloom year after year.

Chives belong to the allium group including: onions, garlic, leeks, and scallions. In recent studies allium has been said to decrease the risk of certain kinds of cancers (esophageal, stomach, and prostate). This group of herbs is also known for their antioxidants which are found in their leaves. Chives are one of the more deluded allium herbs in the group, which means their benefits aren’t quite as strong as an eye-watering onion; but their subtle flavor makes them more versatile in the recipe box.
