The Peoria Zoo will be holding a homeschool class from 10-11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 10. This program will be all about tigers. The zoo's hands-on homeschool science classes are aligned with state standards and give kids a special look at the zoo.
Tigers are the biggest wild cats in the world. The tigers at the Peoria Zoo are Amur tigers. Also known as Siberian tigers, Amur tigers are native to Asia, especially Russia and China.
On June 24, 2012, four tiger cubs were born at the Peoria Zoo. The zoo's participation in the Tiger Species Survival Plan program helps ensure the survival of this endangered species. The tigers have been off-exhibit in recent months, because their enclosure is currently under renovation.
The cost of the homeschool class is $5 for members of the Peoria Zoo and $9 for non-members. Home educator classes at the zoo are open to kids between the ages of five through 13 and are usually divided into two age groups. Parents are invited to stay, but their presence is not required.
Call 309-681-3513 to register for this class about tigers. Programs fill quickly, so please register early. The Peoria Zoo is at 2218 North Prospect Road, Peoria, Ill.
