Among the People's Choice Awards 2014 winners for Wednesday night were Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev of "The Vampire Diaries." The on-screen couple known as Damon and Elena scored the Favorite On-Screen Chemistry award, besting other couples such as Kurt and Blaine from “Glee,” Derek and Meredith from “Grey’s Anatomy,” and Emma and Hook from “Once Upon a Time.” Dobrev and Somerhalder may have been back together on stage, but joked about their breakup in real life when receiving the PCA.
According to E! Online on Jan. 9 when the duo were on stage accepting the award together, they reminisced over the couple falling in love on the show, as well as in real life. Somerhalder mentioned “Can you believe this is almost five years in the making?” Dobrev quickly tossed in the notion that “At the beginning of the show, Elena actually hated Damon.” Somerhalder said it was because “You were hooking up with my brother!” while Dobrev retaliated with “You killed my brother.”
The two went on with the banter but also Somerhalder brought up how they started to date in real life. Dobrev mentioned they called it quits this past May 2013 after dating for three years. Somerhalder said:
"And yet our characters are still dating on the show."
"It's a good thing it's not awkward.
Well, it's a good thing we have chemistry!"
With that, Somerhalder gave an innocent peck on Dobrev’s check. The win kicked off a special day for Dobrev who is celebrating her birthday on Thursday. According to E!’s report, Somerhalder was one of the first to tweet her a Happy Birthday greeting on Twitter. It goes to show that all is fair in “love and vampire war,” or in Hollywood, at least for this TV couple.
Other television winners for the 2014 People’s Choice Awards included the hit show “The Big Bang Theory,” “Beauty & The Beast,” “Homeland,” “The Walking Dead,” and “The Voice.” Somerhalder scored the Favorite Sci-fi/Fantasy Actor award, although Dobrev lost out in the female version of the category to Kristin Kreuk of “Beauty & The Beast.” A full list of award winners can be seen here at the PCA site.
