Pentatonix comes to Des Moines on March 6 (Photos)

Season 3 winners of NBC's The Sing-Off Pentatonix will bring their current nationwide tour to Iowa when they stop at the Val Air Ballroom (301 Ashworth Road) in West Des Moines on Wednesday, March 6. Doors for the show will open at 6 p.m., and the music will kick off at 7 p.m. Tickets for the event are $25 in advance and $30 the day of the show. Tickets may be purchased at the Val Air box office or online through TicketWeb. This is an all ages event.

The a capella quartet Pentatonix got their start in Arlington, Texas, but not in the way that most bands get their start. They didn't meet and start practicing together, and then slowly build a following. The full five members didn't actually all meet each other in person until the day before their audition for NBC's The Sing-Off in 2011. Scott Hoying decided to audition and recruited hometown friends Kirstin Maldonado and Mitch Grassi. The three had sung together in high school. Hoying then recruited Avi Kaplan based on his reputation on the Southern California music scene and beatboxer Kevin Olusola based on the popularity of one of his YouTube videos.

Together as Pentatonix, the quartet would go on to win Season 3 of The Sing-Off and launch a successful career together in music. The band released their first EP entitled PTX Volume 1 in June of 2012. The group followed that up with a Christmas EP, PTXmas, later that year. Pentatonix is currently working on their next release, PTX Volume 2. Check out the group's cover of Gotye's hit single "Somebody That I Used To Know" in the video below.
