Pensacola Beach: Gem of the Panhandle (Photos)

Pensacola Beach gets plenty of visitors, but there are a lot of vacationers who pass right by on their way to less attractive, more crowded destinations farther down the coast. If they took the time to stop and look around, they might cancel their reservations in Destin or Panama City.

The white sand beaches and turquoise waters of Pensacola Beach rival those seen in the Caribbean. Seriously. A combination of hotel and beach house rentals, provide plenty of accommodation options for vacationers and, while the restaurant options aren't as numerous as some beach towns, there is a solid selection of dining spots. The sister restaurants Flounders and Crabs: We Got 'Em are two of this beach towns notable eateries.

You'll find the typical chain souvenir shops and a handful of bars, but the over the top spring break-style nightclubs are noticeably absent and, while this resort is certainly commercialized, it's not as congested and caters to a wider cross-section of age demographics than some Florida getaways. This balance is one of the appeals of Pensacola Beach.

Pensacola Beach is located on Santa Rosa Island, just across from the mid-sized city of Pensacola.Though Pensacola is not a large city, it is an old remnant of French and Spanish colonial days and has a noteworthy historic quarter. It is home to a well established, but family friendly, Mardi Gras celebration and, perhaps, is best known in contemporary times as the home of the Pensacola Naval Air Station. Pensacola NAS, in turn, is home to the Navy's celebrated Blue Angels aerial demonstration team and to the world class National Naval Aviation Museum. So, if you're looking for some non-beach diversions on your trip, you don't have to go far to find some fun activities.

From much of the Mid-South, Pensacola Beach is actually the quickest place to get to for sticking your toes in the ocean. For instance, from Nashville, you can make it to Pensacola Beach in seven hours without pushing it too hard. Gulf Shores is the only other place you might get to in that time, but traffic is likely to interfere with that timeline and once you get there, you are dealing with congestion on a level that is unknown in Pensacola Beach. To hit any other significant beaches, you have to tack on at least an hour to your drive and you're not likely to have quite the same level of scenic beauty.
