Pens open the NHL home season losing on the ice and at the taps

Last night the Pittsburgh Penguins opened the doors at Consol Energy Center for their abbreviated season and while the game was lackluster, losing 5-2 to Toronto, the real action came in the stands.

The first four games of the season will have gifts for fans in the form of free food. While this might sound tempting, all it did was cause major gridlock in the hallways. How do you pass 45 minutes waiting for a free hot dog and nachos? Easy, grab a couple beers!

The craft beer selection at Consol has been disappointing since the doors opened a few years ago. Big beers obviously have a presence, as with any arena, but if you want something local or on the level of craft the choices are limited and you’re better off going to a Pirates game.

Paging through the IceTime Magazine, given to every fan as they enter the arena, you'll notice the beer selection appears to have a better presence. Maybe it’s a new layout or actually more items but after studying the brands its more macro and no change to craft offerings.

Here is a list of what you can find and which sections they are located. Expect to pay between $7-$9 depending on can or draft. Like their counterparts at PNC Park, pay attention to the signage.

Craft Beer

  • Allegheny Pale Ale (102, 112, 207)
  • Babbling Blonde (102, 112)
  • Old Wylie’s IPA (102, 106, 102, 112, 207)
  • Penn Pilsner (102, 106, 108, 112, 207, 218)

Attached to this article is the listing of all beers including macros. When going to Consol Energy Center for any event consider your craft beer cravings before heading in.
