MILO--- The defending state champions from Penquis high school will need production from many newcomers if they are going to reach the boys basketball tournament again this season.

First year coach Jason Mills will look to the two returning seniors to lead the way for this years group of Patriots.

They do have Trevor Lyford returning and that will make the Patriots a threat against anyone on their schedule.

"Trevor (Lyford) is a four year starter who is one of the top players not just in class C, but all of Eastern Maine,"Mills said. "Trevor was an all tournament selection last year and honorable mention on the Bangor Daily News All State team as well."

Colton Larrabee will be counted on to add scoring punch for the Patriots. Clayton Tarnoczy and Justin Larry will also be counted on to play key minutes.

"Colton Larrabee is another senior who will counted on for scoring this year,"Mills said. "Two key juniors for the team this year are Clayton Tarnoczy and Justin Larry. Both will be counted for major contributions this year after not seeing much action last year."

Mills who is replacing long time coach Tony Hamlin, will fill out his roster with newcomers to varsity playing time.

"Sophomores Noah Allen and Giavani Sibert will be asked to step up this year and help replace the six seniors that graduated last year,"Mills said. "Freshman Claytie Preble and first year senior player Cody Cobb will be counted on as well this year. Rounding out the roster are Cevonte Johnson (senior), juniors Phillip Cook and James Gerrish-Baker, and freshman Charles Artus."

Replacing leading scorer Isaiah Bess (transferred to Hampden) plus two other starters will not be easy, but this group of Patriots led by Lyford will be competitive each time they step on the court.

"Challenges for the team this year are replacing the six seniors who graduated off last years squad, three of whom were starters and two being the first two subs off the bench."Mills said. "This years team is young in fact only Trevor Lyford saw major minutes last year. This will be tough as three of the teams first four games are on the road to start the season."

The Patriots are picked 4th in the preseason Eastern Maine high school sports examiner's class C predictions.

Penquis will open the regular season at Schenck. The home opener will be against Dexter. Click here for the full schedule.
