2014 is already looking like a great year for television, especially for horror lovers.
In addition to HBO's serial killer thriller 'True Detective' (which I'll be reviewing next Monday), the Showtime network will debut 'Penny Dreadful' in the spring. It imagines what it would be like if several iconic horror characters were all living in close quarters in Victorian London.
Or as Showtime's official announcement puts it; "Some of literature's most terrifying characters, including Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, and iconic figures from the novel Dracula, are lurking in the darkest corners of Victorian London. "PENNY DREADFUL" is a frightening psychological thriller that weaves together these classic horror origin stories into a new adult drama."
Showtime released a new still image on January 9th, which shows a cast of characters looking at a dead body of unknown origin. Pictured from left are Josh Hartnett, Harry Treadaway, Eva Green, and Timothy Dalton.
The show will be helmed by producer/writer John Bolton, who has 'Gladiator', 'Hugo' and 'The Aviator' to his credit. It will be executive produced by director Sam Mendes ('Skyfall', 'American Beauty'.)
With such an impressive pedigree of cast and creatives, 'Penny Dreadful' is poised to be another winner for Showtime, and I'll be reviewing it whenever it makes it's official debut. You can visit 'Penny Dreadful's' official site for more info on the series.
